A cadet from Cornwall Army Cadet Force has had a slightly more challenging journey to get to get to summer camp than most.
Alfie Bennett is just one of eighty people who are lucky enough to call the remote island of Bryher, part of the Isles of Scilly, home. The Isles of Scilly are twenty-eight miles off the coast of Cornwall, and supports a small detachment of Army Cadets
Cadet Alfie Bennett wrote about his summer camp experience;
“I feel really lucky, coming from the Isles of Scilly, to be able to attend cadet camp. It is a great opportunity to meet new people and develop my skills. On the latest camp I learnt navigation, field craft and marksmanship.
“My journey to get to camp involved a quad bike, a boat, a taxi, a plane and a car! The long journey was definitely worth it. I really enjoyed learning new skills and being able to meet and work with cadets from different areas of Cornwall.
“I was given permission to leave camp a few hours early so I could catch the last flight home and sail in the annual Round the Island Race in the Isles of Scilly. I got home at 6:30pm and was sailing down to the pre-race briefing at 8:30am the next day.
“The race goes round St Mary’s which is the largest island and finishes on St Agnes. I managed to be the second boat over the this year which was an amazing experience. I can’t wait to attend next year’s camp and hopefully compete in the Round the Island Sailing Race again.”
