University Royal Navy Units

096

There are currently 15 URNUs supporting the countries’ leading Universities in England, Wales and Scotland. The organisation’s Mission is to “educate a wide spectrum of high calibre undergraduates who show potential as society’s future leaders and opinion formers in order to better inform them of the need for and role of the Royal Navy, and to develop awareness of career opportunities in the Service.” Each URNU is commanded by a RN Lieutenant who is responsible for 51 undergraduates who each join the URNU as RN Reservists for their 3 years at University. Training is conducted one evening a week in shore units at or near the University and at sea, over the weekends and during the vacations, by a dedicated Archer Class P2000 20 metre Patrol craft.

The Wessex RFCA area has an URNU in Bristol and one in Plymouth. Membership of Bristol URNU is open to undergraduate students of Bristol University, Bath University, the University of the West of England and other local institutions of higher education. Devon URNU is open to Exeter University, Plymouth University and other local institutions. Bristol URNU operates from a shore headquarters on the Bristol University campus. Devon URNU operates from HMS VIVID in Devonport, Plymouth. The Officer-in-Charges of the Units are full time Royal Navy officers and the Units have an established strength of 50 undergraduate members who hold the rank of Officer Cadet or Midshipman in the Royal Naval Reserve.
