Eight exceptional individuals from Cornwall’s Cadet and Reserve community were honoured for their outstanding service and dedication at a special ceremony held at 505 Squadron Headquarters, RAF St Mawgan. The event celebrated the tireless efforts of volunteers, reservists, and Cadet Force leaders who make invaluable contributions to the region’s Defence community.
The awards were presented by the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Colonel Sir Edward Bolitho, who recognised the recipients’ significant contributions to both Defence and the development of young people through the Cadet Forces. Each recipient was presented with His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificate for Meritorious Service, in acknowledgment of their exceptional work in supporting the Armed Forces and fostering youth development.
The recipients were;
– Sergeant Melanie Findler – 505 (Wessex) Squadron, Royal Auxiliary Air Force
– Commodore CBE RN (Ret’d) Peter Fish
– Lieutenant Jody Tomlinson – Cornwall Army Cadet Force
– Warrant Officer Class 2 Stephen Frost – South West Cadet Training Team
– Chief Petty Officer David Green – Padstow Sea Cadets
– Colour Serjeant Ben Whitehouse – 6th Battalion The Rifles
– Mr Gary White – Wessex Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association
– Mr Jonathon Light – Wessex Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association
In his address, Colonel Sir Edward Bolitho expressed deep admiration for the awardees, stating: “When you listen to the citations and see the people who have received awards today, you realise the brilliance that exists in the world, all thanks to individuals who are prepared to give up their time to help others and make Cornwall a better place. I offer my sincere thanks to all the award winners.”
The ceremony also recognised three outstanding Cadets, who were invested as Lord Lieutenant’s Cadets. These young leaders will serve as ambassadors for youth in the region, representing the values of service, discipline, and leadership that are central to the Cadet Forces.
In addition, three local businesses were honoured with Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Awards for their unwavering support of Defence personnel. These awards highlight the crucial role that businesses play in supporting Armed Forces reservists and veterans, as well as their families.
The ceremony underscored the indispensable role that adult volunteers and Reservists play in supporting the UK’s Defence forces. Through their service, they ensure that future generations are equipped with the skills, discipline, and leadership needed to thrive in both civilian and military life.
