Devon Employers Recognised for Supporting Defence Personnel at Exeter Ceremony

04.10.2024

On Tuesday, 1st October 2024, several Devon employers were honoured with Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Silver Awards at a ceremony at County Hall, Exeter. The awards recognise businesses for their exceptional support of Defence personnel, including Reservists, Cadet Force Adult Volunteers, and veterans.

This year’s Silver Award recipients—Alliance Pioneer Group Ltd, Low Carbon Estates Ltd, MLA College Ltd, and Home Instead Tavistock & Tamar Valley—were praised for their strong commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant. Their efforts include providing additional leave for Reservists, flexible working for military spouses, and offering veterans mentoring, training, and guaranteed job interviews. The employers are among 40 employers from across the South West who were recognised for their support this year.

Phil Hughes, Head of Operations for MLA College, said about winning the award; “I am veteran myself and since I joined MLA College I feel I have been valued for what I can bring to the college. As a company we see the benefit in the veteran, reservist and cadet force community and we are very proud to support the work they do to serve our country.

“It is fantastic to be recognised, we are very proud of our veteran community and support a number of souses at MLA College and we are hopeful we can grow our own delivery to the wider armed forces community.”

Deputy Lieutenant Rear Admiral Chris Snow CBE, said; “Our reserve service is getting more complex and without the engagement of employers…it wouldn’t work at all, so I really would really like to recognise the work of all four Silver Award winners for everything they do voluntarily, on behalf of the armed forces.”

Alongside the employers, 18 Reservists and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers were presented with His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificates for Meritorious Service, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the Defence community.

The Awards ceremonies, organised on behalf of the Lord Lieutenant by Wessex RFCA, celebrate outstanding contributions to the Reserve and Cadet Forces in the Wessex region. These prestigious awards recognise the dedication and commitment of individuals and organisations that support military readiness and community engagement. By honouring those who excel in leadership, mentorship, and service, the awards aim to foster a deeper appreciation for the vital role that Reserve and Cadet Forces play in both local and national contexts. This annual event not only highlights individual achievements but also strengthens the bond between the military and the communities they serve.

The ERS Silver Award acknowledges organisations that actively support Defence personnel and have passed rigorous scrutiny by the tri-Service Regional Employer Engagement Board.
