Employers Gain Insight into Life as a Reservist at RAF St Mawgan

23.09.2024

Employers of RAF Reservists from 505 (Wessex) Squadron were given a unique glimpse into military life during an insight day held at RAF St Mawgan. The event, led by the Squadron’s Executive Officer, Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) “Snips” Barber, was designed to showcase the skills and experiences Reservists acquire through their service.

Participants engaged in hands-on activities, including a simulated shooting session using the Dismounted Close Combat Trainer (DCCT), which allowed them to experience realistic combat training scenarios. Another highlight of the day involved attempting to camouflage a land rover, a task that emphasised the strategic thinking and adaptability required in military operations.

A posh buffet lunch, crafted by one of the squadron’s Reservist chefs, added a touch of culinary flair to the day’s events.

The insight day not only provided an entertaining experience but also highlighted the value that Reservists bring to their civilian roles. Sam from Capita shared, “I had a great day. I was a bit nervous about shooting, but I loved it!”

Andy from HMRC reflected on the experience, saying, “It was great to see my employee in a different environment, showcasing the skills that I now realise she has gained as a Reservist.”

The event served to strengthen the relationship between the RAF and civilian employers, offering a deeper appreciation of the dual roles played by Reservists in both military and civilian life.
