MARK SHELFORD APPOINTED AS COUNTY BOARD MEMBER FOR SOMERSET AT WESSEX RESERVE FORCES AND CADETS ASSOCIATION

Written by Mark Shelford

SOMERSET, UK – 20th MARCH 2025 – It is with immense pride and enthusiasm that I announce my appointment to the Board of the Wessex Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association (RFCA) as the County Board Member for Somerset. This is not just a personal milestone, but an exciting opportunity to actively support the vital work being carried out by our Reservists, Cadets, veterans, and the wider Armed Forces community that supports them. I am deeply committed to advancing initiatives that reflect the values of the association and serve the people of Somerset and beyond.

Key Priorities and Commitments

As the new County Board Member for Somerset, I am focused on several key priorities that align with both the values of Wessex RFCA and the needs of our communities:

Supporting Reserves and Employers: A core priority of my role will be bridging the gap between Reservists, their employers, and potential employers. I plan to raise awareness about the unique skills and capabilities that Reservists bring to the workforce. Additionally, I will work to clarify employer liabilities and encourage collaboration between employers and the Reserve Forces community. Employers who are interested in learning more or getting involved with the Reservist community are encouraged to reach out.

Cadets & Youth Empowerment: I am passionate about empowering young people in Somerset through cadet programmes. These units provide an exceptional opportunity for young people to develop leadership skills, resilience, and community spirit. I am committed to expanding access to cadet units, ensuring that every young person in our region has the chance to participate, regardless of their background. By strengthening youth development, we are building the next generation of leaders who will contribute positively to Somerset’s future.

Veteran Advocacy and Rehabilitation: Drawing on my experience as Police and Crime Commissioner, I have witnessed the challenges veterans face, especially those navigating the criminal justice system. I am committed to ensuring that veterans have access to the support they need, from mental health services to housing assistance. A key initiative close to my heart is the Prisoners Building Homes Programme, which offers artisan training and qualifications for veterans. One of the programme’s graduates has gone on to become a site foreman for a major developer, earning £65k annually, showcasing the transformative power of such initiatives.

Grassroots Engagement: Over the coming months, I will be visiting various Cadet units, Reserve bases, veterans’ breakfast clubs, and employer networks across Somerset. My goal is to listen to their needs, understand the challenges, and work collaboratively to create solutions that benefit the entire community. By engaging directly with those who serve and their families, we will ensure that the voices of all stakeholders are heard and supported.

A Call to Action

Whether you are a Cadet, adult volunteer, Reservist, employer, veteran, or someone simply interested in supporting the cause, I encourage you to get involved. Your input and support are essential in driving forward the work of the Wessex RFCA and supporting the Armed Forces community. Refocusing Our Efforts

Wessex RFCA is committed to focusing on key strategic themes that will enhance the impact of our efforts across the region. As shared during our recent AGM in Taunton, we are building our work around the following strategic priorities:

Support and Serve: Energising the Reserve, Cadet, and Adult Volunteer communities to ensure they can continue their vital work.

Engage and Influence: Engaging with influencers and the wider community to support volunteer and employer recruitment.

Recognise & Reward: Celebrating and acknowledging the contributions of those who go above and beyond in their service.

Raise Awareness of Defence: Showcasing the importance of Defence in an increasingly contested world.

Rejuvenate Our Association: Building a more diverse and forward-thinking culture, governed intelligently for those we serve.

Closing Remarks

“Somerset is God’s own County,” as I once remarked to a former Prime Minister. Together, we can continue to uphold that sentiment by empowering our youth, supporting our veterans, and championing the cause of those who serve. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible and working together to build a stronger, safer, and more inclusive Somerset.

Let’s unite to support our Reservists, Cadets, and veterans, and take pride in the positive change we can create together.
