Celebrating Challenge: The Formation of Gloucestershire ACF Corps of Drums Platoon

In April 2024, the Gloucestershire Army Cadet Force (ACF) proudly introduced its Corps of Drums Platoon. Since its launch, the platoon has flourished under the experienced guidance of SI Benjamin McCullough. This committed initiative has already begun to make a significant impact, instilling discipline, teamwork, and a love for music among its cadets.

The Corps of Drums provides cadets with more than just musical instruction. At its core, it nurtures qualities that align with the values of the ACF: commitment, resilience, and leadership. Cadets are taught the fundamentals of military drumming, precision, and ceremonial drill while learning to collaborate as part of a unified group.

Participation in the platoon also promotes confidence and personal growth. Learning an instrument and performing in public are challenges that require cadets to push beyond their comfort zones, helping them develop a sense of achievement and pride in their abilities.

Historically, a corps of drums has played a vital role in military traditions, acting as a medium for communication and morale-building. Today, these aims translate into teaching cadets the importance of teamwork and discipline.

The Gloucestershire ACF Corps of Drums aims to:

  • Enhance ceremonial occasions with engaging performances.
  • Promote association within the platoon and across the ACF.
  • Provide cadets with a unique skill set that blends music and military traditions.

Launching a new initiative is never without its challenges, and the Corps of Drums is no exception. Cadets faced the steep learning curve of mastering new instruments and perfecting their drills. Balancing this with other commitments such as school, family, and regular cadet training demanded dedication and effective time management.

SI McCullough notes that one of the greatest challenges has been creating a sense of cohesion within the platoon. “Each cadet brings a different level of musical experience,” he says, “but it’s incredible to see them come together as a team, helping each other grow and succeed.”

Despite these challenges, the Corps of Drums has already reached remarkable milestones. In December 2024, the cadets received their music badges from the Colonel, a proud moment for all involved. This achievement was followed by their debut performance in front of Bristol and Channel Islands ACF ‘A Company.’ Their precision, self-confidence, and enthusiasm left a lasting impression, setting a high standard for future events.

Looking ahead, the Corps of Drums is preparing for even greater achievements. Plans for regional performances and inter-company collaborations promise to showcase the talent and dedication of the platoon.

The Gloucestershire ACF Corps of Drums exemplifies the essence of “Celebrating Challenge.” Through hard work, resilience, and teamwork, cadets are not only preserving military traditions but also creating a legacy of excellence for future generations.

As SI McCullough fittingly puts it, “This isn’t just about music; it’s about building character and inspiring cadets to rise to any challenge they face.”

This inspiring journey of growth and achievement reminds everyone that with determination and support, any challenge can be transformed into a celebration of success.
