15.11.2024

Three Cornwall-based organisations have been recognised for their exceptional support of the Armed Forces community with the prestigious Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Silver Award. The awards were presented during a special ceremony at the headquarters of 505 Wessex Squadron RAuxAF at RAF St Mawgan.

The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme is a national initiative that acknowledges employers who demonstrate a strong commitment to supporting Defence personnel, including veterans, reservists, and their families.

The ERS Silver Award is given to businesses that actively employ members of the Defence community and promote an inclusive environment for military personnel.

The Cornwall-based businesses honoured with the Silver Award include:

  • Cornwall Hospice Care
  • Cornwall Partnership NHS Trust
  • Secure Forests CIC

The ceremony, attended by senior military and civilian leaders, was addressed by the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Colonel Sir Edward Bolitho, who commended the award recipients. “You listen to the citations and see the people who have received awards, and you realise the brilliance that exists in the world, thanks to individuals who give up their time to help others and make Cornwall a better place. Thank you very much indeed to all the award winners”.

The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme plays a key role in building strong, supportive relationships between the Armed Forces and local employers. The programme ensures that the invaluable contributions of service personnel are recognised within the civilian workforce, fostering greater integration and support for those who serve.

In addition to recognising local businesses, the ceremony also honoured Reservists and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers for their exceptional service. His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificates for Meritorious Service were awarded to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding contributions to the Defence community. Three Cadets were also appointed as Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadets for the coming year, further showcasing the importance of youth involvement in the Armed Forces.

The awards, organised by the Wessex Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association (RFCA) on behalf of the Lord Lieutenant, celebrated the significant efforts of individuals and organisations in supporting the Reserve and Cadet Forces in the Wessex region. These prestigious honours recognise the vital role of volunteers, employers, and the wider community in enhancing military readiness and fostering community engagement.

The ERS Silver Award is presented to businesses that have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to supporting Defence personnel. Recipients undergo a comprehensive assessment by the tri-Service Regional Employer Engagement Board to ensure they meet the rigorous standards set by the scheme.
