Charting the Course: Wessex RFCA’s AGM highlights bold strategies for the future.

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Wessex Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association (RFCA) took place on the 11th September at Taunton Racecourse, marking a significant moment for the organisation and its future direction.

As well as the formal proceedings of the AGM, the event saw a range of prominent speakers addressing key topics related to reserve recruitment and strategy. Captain Carl Necker RN, representing the Royal Navy’s Royal Naval Reserve Units (South), discussed the evolving needs and strategies for maritime reserve recruitment. His presentation emphasised the importance of enhancing recruitment efforts to meet the demands of modern maritime operations.

In his address, Brigadier Steve Rayson, Deputy Commander Home Command, provided insights into the Army’s approach to their reserve forces, outlining current recruitment strategies and the role of reserves in national defence. Brigadier Rayson highlighted recent successes and future plans aimed at bolstering the Army’s reserve capabilities.

The Royal Air Force was represented by Wing Commander Steve Fry, SO1 Res Strat Plans Projects, who spoke about the strategic planning involved in RAF reserve recruitment and how it integrates with broader Air Force objectives. His insights underscored the RAF’s commitment to adapting to new challenges and technologies.

All three speakers highlighted the challenges that all three services faced in the recruitment and retention of reserves.

As well as this Defence Insight Briefing, Wessex RFCAs own Vice-Chair Air, Air Commodore John Bessell, alongside the Chair and Chief Executive, introduced the work carried out by the RFCA’s strategy committee over the past six months. They provided a detailed overview of the strategic developments and future directions for the Wessex RFCA. The presentation outlined upcoming initiatives and strategic goals, aimed at enhancing the association’s impact, effectiveness and value to customers.

As well as our volunteer membership, the event was this year attended by supportive employers from across the South West. Gold and Silver Employer Recognitions Scheme Award holders were invited to the event to allow them greater insight into the challenges surrounding Reserve recruitment.

The event was well-attended by reserve members, community leaders, and stakeholders, marking a productive day of discussions and networking. The gathering underscored the Wessex RFCA’s ongoing commitment to strengthening reserve forces and supporting those who serve.

As the meeting concluded, attendees left with a renewed sense of purpose and direction, reflecting the association’s dedication to advancing the reserve forces’ role in national defence and community support.
